HOMO DIGITALIS

A. ERASMUS-EDU-2023-CBHE: PROJECT 101129182 HOMO DIGITALIS

Project name: Bridging the Digital Humanities and Educational Media Divide in the West Balkans

The ‘digital leap’ is a sustainable formative factor in many areas of science and society. Its advances encompass a wide range of disciplines, including humanities, education and the cultural sector. As an inter-disciplinary field of study, digital humanities are a bridge linking the aforementioned disciplines with information technology for the purpose of helping others experience and explore these areas in new and stimulating ways, as well as scientists within the same disciplines advancing their research using technological tools. Digital humanities and educational media further stretch beyond academia, mainly through collaboration with the cultural heritage, tourism and education sectors. Last but not least, digital humanities have proved to be a major step towards the Europeanization of heritage. Although the necessity to integrate digital tools in humanities and education has been felt in the West Balkans as elsewhere, there is scarcity of operators providing the expert knowledge, skills and competences necessary to develop properly trained professionals to engage technology for the purpose of devising creative solutions in a range of humanities and education application areas at cultural heritage institutions, schools, public agencies, international organisations and private companies. The aim of this project is thus to contribute to bridging the digital humanities and educational media divide in the West Balkans (WB). To this end, relevant state-of-the-art European expertise shall strengthen the Digital Humanities and Education Media expertise in the WB’s partner universities in two directions: 1. Developing a M.Sc. in Digital Media and Education. 2. Revising and updating a number of mandatory and elective courses in existing curricula. The project will provide for substantial laboratory development / enhancement, labour market research in the WB to record current and future trends, specialized training for academic, laboratory staff and students.

“HOMO DIGITALIS”

Bridging the Digital Humanities and Educational Media Divide in the West Balkans

Internationalization is one of the main goals of University College “LOGOS” and in this context, LOGOS, in cooperation with ten institutions of higher education from six countries: Germany, Greece, Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, is implementing the project “Bridging the Digital Humanities and Educational Media Divide in the West Balkans”, Project No. 101129182, with the acronym “Homo Digitalis”, part of the call ERASMUS-EDU-2023-CBHE-STRAND-1. University College LOGOS leads the network of partner universities in this project.

On December 4-6, 2023, in the amphitheatre hall of University College LOGOS, the first general meeting was held in the presence of university leaders, academic and administrative staff, as well as representatives of all partner universities. Part of the meeting was a round table where several issues were addressed, such as some of the latest achievements in the field of digitalization of the humanities, aiding methods and technologies, the need to structure the curriculum and syllabi for the design of a Master's program in digital humanities. The discussions were led by some of the professors of the partner universities involved in this project: Prof. Arbana Kadriu, Dean, Faculty of Contemporary Sciences and Technologies, South East European University, North Macedonia; Prof. Dr. Selma Rizvić, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Hercegovina; Nikolaos Avouris, Dean, School of Engineering, University of Patras, Greece; Associate Professor Dimitris Koukopoulos, Director of the MSc program “Contemporary Approaches to the History and the Archaeology of Cities”, Department of History and Archaeology, University of Patras, Greece; Prof. Dr. Ing. Ernesto William De Luca, Professor for Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence, Otto-von-Guericke-University of Magdeburg, Germany. The coordinator of the "Homo Digitalis" project is Prof. Assoc. Constantinos Giakoumis

The aim of this project is to contribute to the alignment of digital humanities studies and digital educational media in the Western Balkans (BP) with European achievements. For this purpose, the advanced European expertise helps in strengthening the expertise in Digital Humanities Studies and Educational Digital Media in partner universities in WB in two directions: 1. Development of new study programs; 2. Revising and updating the syllabi of mandatory and elective courses in the existing curricula, with methods and approaches that focus on digital transformation. The project also contributes to the development and improvement of the laboratory base of the partner universities, and will carry out an in-depth research on the labor market in WB to adapt the current data with the future trends, as well as develop trainings designed for academic staff, laboratory staff and students.

Participation of University College LOGOS in European projects is part of the strategic plan for the internationalization of the institution.

LOGOS UNIVERSITY COLLEGE AT THE SARAJEVO WORKSHOP: FOCUS ON DIGITAL HUMANITIES AND EDUCATIONAL MEDIA

Four members of the academic and administrative staff from LOGOS University College, including Prof. As. Konstantinos Giakoumis, M.Sc. Eleni Papapano, M.Sc. Xhezmije Lulo, and Ms. Afërdita Pasko, actively participated in a significant workshop held at the School of Science and Technology in Sarajevo.

This workshop was part of the Homo Digitalis ERASMUS+ Project No. 10112918, titled "Bridging the Gap Between Digital Humanities and Educational Media in the Western Balkans," a project passionately led by LOGOS University College.

During this two-day event, which saw the participation of over 30 experts and professionals from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, and Kosovo, the focus was on enhancing ICT skills for humanities specialists and developing humanities knowledge for ICT experts.

The primary goal was to improve teaching and research performance across the region, assisting in bridging the gaps between these two crucial fields.

The workshop, led by Prof. Adrian Besimi and Prof. Visar Shehu from the South East European University in Tetovo, North Macedonia, covered a wide range of topics. Participants engaged in practical sessions that included data visualization using PowerBI and hands-on exercises in crafting research proposals with the use of artificial intelligence tools. LOGOS University College actively contributed to discussions and activities, bringing valuable expertise and experience.

In addition to the highly productive training, the staff expressed a strong desire to deepen their understanding of the country's traditions and culture. With the assistance of Professor and Historian Emir, they had the opportunity to visit several historical sites that reflect Sarajevo's heritage.

The next workshop in this series is scheduled to take place in Pristina, Kosovo, in February 2025, where trainers from the University of Patras, Greece, will lead the sessions. LOGOS University College remains actively committed to such initiatives, reinforcing its dedication to advancing digital humanities and educational media in the Western Balkans.

Our participation in this workshop is a testament to LOGOS University College’s commitment to contributing to the development and advancement of academic and research fields at the regional level.
